Messages From Sandy Neerman
Greensboro Library Director
Denise Turner Roth, our Interim City Manager, has asked me to assume the position of Interim Assistant City Manager as she takes more time to focus on the preparation of the FY 2012-13 budget. This is not a permanent assignment. I will return to the Library in June with the City Council’s approval of the budget. My primary role will be to assist Denise by overseeing the following departments, Libraries, Information Technology, Parks and Recreation and Human Relations. Brigitte Blanton will be Acting Director of our department. She has been with the Library more than 24 years and has directed technology and public service through our branches. I’m confident that during this time the Library will continue to move strategically ahead. Since Brigitte has worked closely with me on all strategic issues, she will be working with the Friends Presidents, Willie Taylor and Lora Bradsher, as they continue to move to a new organizational structure. Steve will continue his work with the Friends Programming projects and serve as Library Administration liaison to the Friends shops. I certainly will be attending your functions and as always be proud of your accomplishments on our behalf.
The City’s Management, Accountability, and Performance business model encourages and requires City staff and especially the City Department Directors to act collaboratively as we work to serve our community. This short term assignment that Brigitte and I are assuming reflects that as a City, we’re no longer focused on who is providing services, as much as we’re focused on the service itself. I want to thank you for your own hard work and commitment to serving the community through the Library. I thank you in advance for the support that I know you’ll give Brigitte as she becomes Acting Library Director.

I want to thank all of you who so kindly have offered your time and hard work to advocate for our Library and our future Lake Jeanette Branch. I want to especially thank our devoted Lake Jeanette Advisory Committee leaders, Loy and Connie Newby, Dan Acker and Sandra Cramer, who have sat through some very long evenings at City Council. Willie Taylor, our Advocacy Chair, each year carries our Advocacy efforts to a higher level.
Even though our reductions are much less than what we initially anticipated, service changes will be necessary to ensure that our Library can move forward strategically and achieve our overall City and Mission goals. The City Manager, Rashad Young, in a short time has pointed the organization to a higher level of service with the Management, Performance and Accountability goals. With all of us working together, our Library/Museum can deliver an even higher level of service in 2011-2012. Thanks to all of you!!
